(Back) Story Matters

Bill Thisdell filmmaker

Like a lot of filmmakers,

I studied physics

...wait, what?

A desire to understand how

the universe works drove me to study physics. Now I use that same curious spirit to craft meaningful stories for clients.

Physics isn’t just about numbers. It describes a universe full of mystery – from immense histories of galaxies to warm sunlight on laughing faces. However, it tells that story in maths and I struggle to speak maths…

But whether it’s maths or moving images – stories can be unwieldy.

  • How do you take complex emotions and shepherd them into a coherent story?

  • How do you focus an idea for maximum story impact?

  • How do you challenge, inform and inspire audiences?

Don't ask me to calculate the gravitational density of a black hole* but do ask me how to get the most out of your storytelling.

Black hole lensing

*divide the mass of a black hole by the volume it occupies... you know, if you really have to

Bill was very quick to make sense of the stories I'd told him, and showed great creative flair in putting together a storyline for the film.

people are the heart
of your story.

I’ve written script coverage for a Hollywood production company and got extremely fast at analysing the strengths and weaknesses of a story. It made me ruthless to narrative fluff.

Sorry not sorry.

I’ve shot documentaries on four continents

(three more to go!) which has connected me with some incredible people.

Like two teenage girls in Ethiopia who not only want to fly airliners but inspire other women to soar.

Like a French horticulturist teaching an Afghani grocer how to listen to the garden growing inside

a refugee camp.

Like a jet-setting quantum physicist trying to answer the most personal question: why do I exist?

A story is an opportunity to find connection in another human being.

These experiences have taught me the best stories are about people.

  • Why do they make choices?

  • How do they feel about those choices?

  • What is the impact of those choices?

Storytelling dictates the entire filmmaking process. And empowering you to tell the best possible story is why I'm here.

This storytelling endeavour is endlessly rewarding. And I don’t have to do maths. Or construct a radio interferometer to take detailed solar radiation measurements. I'm thrilled by that.

How it works

Turn emotion into action

A strong emotional hook is fundamental to creating a compelling video. We need to put people and their experiences at the centre of any story.

1.

Discover insights

Before we get to the fun part, we will have a discovery session to truly understand you, your brand, your audience and your objectives.

2.

Understand audience

Speak to your audience on an emotional level. If they care, they'll act.

3.

Define goals

What do we want to happen? Let's define it and weave our goals into the narrative.

4.

Tell a story

By building on your narrative we can tell a powerful story that connects emotionally with your audience.

The result?

Effective, beautiful videos.
